Filling Big Shoes

,

Hey all!

It's me, Grant. For those who don't me, Grant Fritchey. I work with Steve Jones, the person normally talking to you here. Yes, Redgate actually employs me, and continues to. I don't know why either. Anyway, Steve is off for a few weeks on his sabbatical. More power to him and I hope he enjoys the time off.

Meanwhile, you're left to the tender mercies of myself, and my amazing co-worker, Kellyn Gorman (you'll hear from her later). We'll be providing you with editorials and the newsletter while Steve is away. I feel just how big the shoes I'm trying to fill truly are. It's a bit daunting.

So, my question to you is pretty simple. Have you ever had to do this? Step up into another's role and you're pretty sure you maybe aren't completely up to snuff on it? I'm neck deep in it now. Here's a few things I'm doing about it. First, yeah, I'm straight up acknowledging the fear. Why hide from it. Put it front and center so you can keep an eye on it (fear is pernicious & sneaky). Next, I'm fully recognizing that I'm not Steve and so, I'm not even going to try to be Steve. Instead, I'm going to be Grant, doing Steve's job. Finally, I'm being cautious. I'm very aware that I'm playing in Steve's pool right now, and I'm going to treat it kindly. You know what I mean.

When you've hit this particular challenge, what did you do? How did it go? And please, let me and Kellyn know how we're doing.
