Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Hoo boy, I need to stop joking about living in "interesting times."

    We're a small team, 8 people (as of right now, keep reading,) we had 9 (one guy got moved to another team,) and we're about to get smaller.  1 guy has decided it's time to throw in the towel and retire, 1 guy is semi-looking for a different position, and 1 guy is not entirely happy and is looking (and, he's the guy who's been getting trained to support the specialized app the retiring guy has been supporting since '07)

    We could very quickly become a team of 5, and of that 5:

    • 2x are more "admin" / cyber-security than app support
    • 1x is a contractor who could leave on a whim
    • 1x is the web server support guy
    • 1x is the SQL Server support guy (me)

    AND to add to the fun-factor, we're in a hiring freeze with no signs of it ending any time soon, so no backfilling if someone leaves and no adding bodies to the contract...

    Gonna be an interesting next couple months

  • Yeah, the camping trip this past weekend was a nice get-away.  Took my Jeep off roading near the campground, spent a fair bit of time just loafing in a lounger with a good book...

    Got chewed up by insects some, but that's what happens in the outdoors!

  • So the wife and I had a discussion and, presuming my employer declines to pay for me to go to Summit in November, we're going to pay out of pocket.

    My question for the regular attendees, do I need to worry about the 3-day passes selling out?  I'm thinking the soonest / latest I'll find out if my employer is paying is going to be early October, and if I pay my way now and they approve me going, I won't be reimbursed.

  • Well one advantage I'll have attending Summit in November on my dime...

    I can ignore any incoming calls on my phone from the office!  TECHNICALLY I'll be on "vacation"  LoL

  • I know I've been busy, and losing notifications for a few weeks (WP upgrade) was really impactful.

    Hopefully your note (or mine) ping a few people.

  • The absence of notifications did a lot. Anyway there is a new version of Visual Studio 2026 and SSMS 22 (instead of 21)

  • Yeah, FYI, if you had ssms 22 preview, I couldn't upgrade it from the VS installed. Had to go to aka.ms/ssms to get the new installer. Uninstalled old, installing new now (and fingers crossed). The GHCP integration was flaky for me in preview, so hoping it's better now.

  • It's a big month for me.  After 21 years, I'm being made redundant on the 28th when we finally hand over our contract to another company.  I started at the very pointy end of the operation, knocking on peoples' doors in the middle of the night but I'm finishing off a long way from there.  Job-hunting is scary.

  • 21 years is a good run. It's a shame about the redundancy right before the holiday season. I don't know if my company has openings for your skill set or not, but check out our jobs link to see if anything speaks to you.

    U.S. is definitely WFH remote. Belfast I think is WFH remote. Not sure about jobs listed for any other "location."
