  • is anyone using a KVM switch to jump between a home PC and a work laptop?

I have two monitors, a keyboard and mouse currently connected to my home PC.  I usually just connected to my work VDI through VMWare.  We will soon need to start using a company laptop that we need to use at home and in the office.

I want to set up my setup at home to be able to use my two monitors with my home PC when not working, but be able to switch to my work laptop to use the same monitors/keyboard/mouse.  I don't want to have to unplug everything from the home pc to connect to the work laptop.

I've been trying to research what best to use on line but I would like get some real world feedback from people who may be using a KVM switch.  Looking for any info you can provide.

  • Went to Chattanooga, TN for the weekend for a writers convention and discovered...

Scenic City Summit was taking place for at least one of the same days.  Wish I'd known about it sooner, as I might've pushed the wife to get there a bit sooner and attended BOTH events!

I will say, I did get to meet at the writers convention (it's more than just writers,) Eric S Raymond, which was cool (when I realized who he was,) and hear his mind on "AI" on a discussion of "AI: How worried should we be, and how soon?"

It's something I considered for some time, but I ended up switching to a corner desk and just rotated 90° when i wanted to change device.

Of course, since, the Mrs has taken a full working from home job, and therefore I lost my study and now work at the office 5 days a week. 🙁

We do have KVMs in the server room, but they're old, so i don't think they would be a reliable example.

If you have an opening and you are OK with a remote worker let me know.  Willing to entertain a hybrid environment.

I use a Terived 2 port KVM to switch between home and work machines(bought from Amazon). Push a button on the front and it switches. Really simple. I have two 27 inch monitors, one a 1080p the other a 4k. No issues at all. I am using Display Port cables for the monitors. The work laptop is connected to a Dell docking station that connects to the switch. I do use a different mouse for each PC, the work mouse is a Logitech wireless vertical mouse while the home PC uses a wired Logitech gaming mouse. I use a gaming keyboard for both machines. I've been very happy with the setup.

If anyone is looking for a good desk, I use an Uplift desk sit/stand desk that is 60 inches wide and 30 inches deep. Bamboo top with a slight cutout in the front. I added the popup power option for the left rear hole that has 4 AC outlets and several USB outlets. Not the cheapest desk out there, but very solid and better motors than the Herman Miller desks we have at work.

  • Thanks for the feedback Ross.  I ended up with a UGreen 4K 60Hz I got from Amazon.  One issue was that I had a display port hooked up from my PC to my monitor, the KVM only took HDMI.  I just bought a display port to HDMI cable.  The laptop came with a dongle I used to plug into the KVM.  So I could use all three screens, my 2 27 inch monitors and the laptop.

One negative I would say is the home PC would go into a deep sleep if I hadn't switched over in a while.  Had to tap the power to wake it up.  The other issue was the laptop would 'loose' what screens I had things on when I switched.  Small inconvenience to have to rearrange everything.  Now I don't need it, but I'll hang on to it in case my new job allows me to work from home.
