First Episodes

,

Today we have a guest editorial from Andy Warren as Steve is on vacation.

It was one of those things that I didn’t plan on. I wanted to watch something on TV to relax on a weekend, and after click-clicking around I ended up watching the very first episode of Adam-12. Since then I’ve watched the first episode of Columbo, Emergency, The A Team, and Bret Maverick, probably a few more.

It was interesting to revisit some of that stuff from the past! Maybe what made me want to watch a few more was that first episode of Adam-12. I don’t know that I had ever seen it, and it turned out to be in part a story about mentors, a topic of special interest to me. Watching the episode you see how much the physical part of the world has changed (the cars, the signs, etc) and how much the people part hasn’t changed much. Kent McCord still reminds me of my friend Nelson too!

Ah, Columbo. Right from the start he was a persistent guy. Emergency in that first episode was about the start of the EMT program back when it seemed like a risky/wild idea. The A Team? Still fun to watch Hannibal Smith. Bret Maverick? I remembered the part where he was going into the big game and the Sheriff was making the players check their guns. Maverick had….ten! Plus one more, or a bluff, we never quite find out which.

Watching those was a lot like comfort food, or seeing an old friend. Some were still as good as ever, some lacked a bit of the luster they had when seen through younger eyes. I tried to talk my daughters into revisiting those years with me but the only one that caught their attention was…Gilligan’s Island!

It’s not a bad way to spend an hour on a weekend evening.
