Are the posted questions getting worse?

Didn't w98 will require some DOS boot stuff for setup? Not sure since I stuck with W95 until W2K

I will check the packaging when I get home, but as I recall, the initial retail copy (clean install) did, since bootable CD's were a foreign concept. By the time you hit win98 SP2, the disk you got was bootable (the Bios versions had caught up by then).

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

  • You still have a package!?!?!?!?!

    Geek alert! Whoop!

I don't think I had good bootable images until W2K or XP even. Seems like I always had some rigamarole when I downloaded an image from MS until then.

The stuff was still there, but you could rip it out if you knew how.

... Memories of holding my breath during reboot hoping that the operating system (Windows 3.11) would come up abound. ...

Wasn't Windows 3.11 "just" an application back in those days that required one of the DOS versions underneath as an OS? Or do I have a memory leak?

Yes, as I remember, there was DOS 6.0 on the computer as well. However, from what I remember, the bootup sequence was DOS 6.0 directly into Win 3.11. Thus, if Win 3.11 got corrupted by the blue screen of death, your only option might be to reinstall the operating system so you could get to the computer. I never had to build a Win 3.11 machine so I'm not familiar with the install problems, just talk from a co-worker who was responsible for such things.

Win 95 was when I started building my own systems. I fondly remember making the stack of floppies to use in installing all my programs form scratch and sitting there for an afternoon (if nothing went wrong) feeding the computer floppies. Just don't knock the stack down.

So - this is probably not a good time to bring up the packet of 5.25" disks containing Windows 3.0 and dos 5...? (I also shrinkwrapped a workable "dual" 5.25 /3.5" floppy drive, just in case 😛 )

  • A couple years ago someone gave out a complete copy of W95 on floppy disks as a white elephant gift at Christmas. That was pretty funny.

I think I've trashed all floppy disks that I've found in my desk. Nostalgic, but the reality is that I'm not sure I have hardware to even read them in the house.

  • I don't remember if it was Win 95 or 98, but I remember the 30+ floppies it rode in on.

I think I'm pretty safe with trashing my 5.25's these days, but I did have a lot of upgrade-resistant folks (not for proifts, hospitals, etc...) so I decided to play it safe.

If you need a gag gift - I think I have a full set of floppies AND manuals for Office 4.3... It only weighs 30 or so pounds!

  • I still have my original copy of the Commodore 64 programmer's reference guide, and a complete disassembly of the ROMs...

  • Nostalgic yes - But I have found that a bunch of mine were unreadable after several years in storage. I think I still have some, but most were trashed.

White Elephant Gift - funny. Could you imagine Windows 7 being installed via floppy?

Heck, Win 7 on CD might be funny now!

Make them single-sided, single-density, and then you have a real gag gift.....

I had the floppies for both versions.

Maybe Steve could use them as door giveaways at the SSC party at PASS Summit. :w00t:

Ouch - I had actually forgotten about that. I remember when DS/DD came out and it was the bomb...
