Are the posted questions getting worse?

Wahoo! My users group just scheduled me to speak in August. Let the stress begin.... 😀

Well, today is the day, wish me luck! T minus 6 hours 7 minutes and counting. I also submitted the topic I'm covering for SQL Saturday, and I'm sure the organizer is going to be there today. Since the selection happens later this week, it feels like an audition - realistically I don't know how it couldn't be. It will be good - if they select me, I know it will be 100% on merit, and if they don't select me I'll know that I probably would have embarrassed myself there anyway. If you're the praying type, I wouldn't mind any petitions in my behalf.

    Thanks,

    Chad

Obviously anything I have to say is going to be taken the wrong way.

Well, after your earlier reply followed by this which read one after the other convey very clearly the implication that his only interest in helping people or contributing to the community is self-satisfaction it's hardly surprising that he feels you are unjustifiably hypercritical, is it? And you've continued in the same vein here too, haven't you? You need to learn to give people the benefit of the doubt, especially when nothing they've actually said justifies the (really insulting) interpretation you persist in appearing to place on it. I'm beginning to wonder where your "Saint" reputation comes from - it appears to me that if you have a halo it's definitely slipping, maybe it has even fallen right off.

There. that's probably made me unpopular with the great and good of the thread - but I believe it needed saying.

    edit: fix url syntax

I hadn't thought about it quite that way, Tom. The written word, especially from someone struggling a bit with English, can sometimes be taken the wrong way. Giving someone the benefit of the doubt is certainly the right thing to do.

I have to admit, though... the OP sounded like his goal of becoming an MVP was a goal to enhance his resume more than it was to become a helpful carbon-based lifeform.

His posts read that way to me, too.

I, on the other hand, see nothing wrong with aiming towards MVP, if that's your thing. If someone wants it, and does the work necessary, I see nothing wrong with that.

Not doing the work necessary for it is why I'll never get nominated or accepted for MVP. I help a lot of people on SSC, but nothing like the quantity or quality needed for "Most Valuable" statuses. And I don't do ANY of the peripheral activities (books, presentations, et al), and haven't written an article in something like 2 years (though I've got two on a back burner for when I have time for them). I don't aim for MVP, and don't spend the time/work needed to even be in consideration for it.

But if someone else wants it, and aims for it, and works for it, more power to them. It's a good thing to do that. Even if it isn't following some ideal of having no ego in it.

Actually Tom, I read more into what Jeff said. IMHO, jeff was also trying to show him how to become better. Test your code; look for, develop, and test alternatives. Don't settle for something that just happens to work.

Building on that, I tried to impress the need to learn more and explore, and then share what you learn with others. Step out of your comfort zone (some I still need to do by getting out there and trying my hand and presenting at user group meetings).

There is more to just helping others than just providing an answer.

Yes, I saw your [comment where you reinforced Jeff's post. I felt it was much more your usual form than some of your other comments in that thread - providing useful suggestions and information, helping someone to grow and improve. There was certainly nothing I would take issue with there, but I don't think you read anything into what Jeff said that I didn't - he is always trying to help people improve themselves, show them how to become better - and I reckon he succeeded with me, because some of the techniques I learned from him when first I came to SQLServerCentral are now enshrined in software live on various sites in the Middle East, the Carribean, and the UK.

Also, you focused on the wrong part of his statement. The part that encouraged a response was "an up and coming future MVP."

It isn't enough to just help others; look at what I have done here on ssc, the people I have helped. There is a lot more that one needs to do for Microsoft to bestow the honor on MVP to someone.

I don't see that as saying "I want to be an MVP purely for self gratification" (which is what you effectively told him you thought it meant); I see that part as replying to Craig in a rather obvious way - given that the guy doesn't yet have a reputation as an SQL expert and communicty contributor, what other answer would you expect to Craig's question?. Your first repsonse to it "that isn't enough" was harmelss on its own (better than harmless, probably - it was useful because loving helping people really isn't enough on its own), but when you responded to Remi shortly afterwards the effect of your words was to put a thoroughly nasty spin onto that first response. And since then you seem to believe that spin, and I really don't understand why; maybe it's because when he responded to that spin in an upset and hurt manner you hadn't realised what your two comments taken together effectively said, so took his repsonse wrongly, and everything has reinforced itself from there on.

But well, I guess we'll just have to agree to differ. This isn't taking us anywhere useful, because we are evidently going to disagree unless something remarkable happens.

    Good luck.

Remember to keep a 4-leafed clover in your shirt pocket, a rabbit's foot in your jacket pocket, and a smile on your face (except when speaking needs sounds incompatible with that mouth shape - smiling whiletrying to pronounce open back vowels can sometimes render you incomprehensible). And fainting at the microphone is definitely not recommended.

For those of you that do consulting, and for those thinking about it, what do you'll think of this? Steve, what do you think of a forum area dedicated to this?

Feel free to build a thread. If there's enough call, I could put one in the "career area" if you want. Will there be enough questions to discuss?

There have been a lot of discussion like that over the years. I think there may be enough to justify it.
