And Then There Was One

With Windows 2008 RTM'ing this past week, we know have two of the three "Launch Event" products available, shipping, and you can buy them. The third, the product that I am most interested in, will be kind of an also-ran at the launch event with a "Beta" being released.

I saw this at the SQL Server 2005 with BizTalk being put out as a Beta while SQL and VS were launched. How'd that work out for BizTalk?

I know there are other issues with BizTalk, but SQL Server is a prepmier product. Don't treat it like it's not and add it onto another event. Especially when you have a huge development event occurring in the second half of the year.

They Listen

I started a build list for SQL Server 2005 awhile back as a place to track all the patches, QFEs, and GDRs for SQL Server because I couldn'd find a good one. Aaron Bertrand had one as well as ASP. We both tried to keep things updated and one of the interesting things is how many people commented that Microsoft should be doing that.

They're trying! and apparently they are listening. They've got a page up that links back Hotfix and KBs to the builds. I'll keep up my page, but I'm glad to see them starting to do something that's effective and valuable to customers.

The JumpStart

I didn't attend, but last week was the SQL Server 2008 Jumpstart up in Redmond and quite a few MVPs attended. I've been seeing interesting posts and blogs about the event all week and I am thinking that the next week or so will have some of that information trickling out.

However I don't expect a lot of new information until after the Launch event at the end of February. CTP 6 is supposed to be released then, and it should be feature complete, which means there are quite a few addiitions from the last version of code that we received.

One thing that does seem to be interesting quite a few people out there is the Filestream option. More and more I'm seeing people comment on how cool this will be. I'm not sure it's the best feature out there, but it does help with a problem that a lot of people struggle with, ask questions about, and write code to solve.

Steve's Pick of the Week

An XBOX 360 as a laptop! It's not SQL Server related, but it's a cool modification for a very cool gaming platform. I'm actually rather interested to know how well it handles heat.
