Script To Show Which Tables Are Changed

The following T-SQL query batch will show you which tables was changed since last execute. Tracking information: (1) changes row count /insert,update,delete/; (2) changes IDENTITY value; (3) changes physical allocations /used pages/; (4) added new tables; (5) dropped tables. The batch must be initialized before using (at least once executed). I use this batch to […]

Generate Add Foreign Keys statements for the table

I was going through the painfull optimization of the database of creating better clustered indexes (not the default ones on the primary key). This operation was requiring removing all foreign keys to this table and then recreation them again.I created this script to optimize this quite tidious task.

Pagination in stored procedure

You recently published a script showing how to do pagination (e.g. results 20 - 30 of 100) It's also possible to do it quicker and more elegantly without having to resort to building the sql string dynamically (never a good thing IMHO). You pass in 2 parameters, @PageIndex is the first record you want (so […]

Calculate distance between two points

The calculation of distance between two points using standard spherical geometry can be inaccurate for short distances (ten miles or less) because the sine function of very small angles approaches zero. The haversine approach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haversine_formula) turns this around, so it is very accurate at small distances but has larger errors (about ten miles) for points […]

Question of the Day

Finding Trailing Spaces

I have some data in a SQL Server 2025 database. It looks like this for the dbo.Customer table:

CustomerID CustomerName PreferredName
1 Steve Steve
2 Andy Andy
3 Brian Brian
4 Allan Allan
5 Devin Devin
6 Steve Steve
7 Sally Sally
I want to detect which names have a single trailing space. The CustomerName is a varchar() and the PreferredName is a CHAR(). Does this query detect the problem rows?
SELECT
       CustomerID,
       CustomerName,
       PreferredName
FROM Customer
WHERE CustomerName <> RTRIM(CustomerName)
OR PreferredName <> RTRIM(PreferredName);
