I don't believe you can upgrade Express to Standard. I think you need to:

• detach dbs
• script out logins and linked servers
• install SQL standard
• attach dbs
• recreate logins

Might need to provide more information about what is not updated and what the errors are. You've sketched a very general problem that is hard to answer.
