They work, but even if you have issues with them, you can patch slammer by fixing the SSNET.DLL file with the patched version.

I work with Tom and the "stovepipe" problem is something I've seen here as well as other places. Having projects like this centralized, even with a steering committee of one...

Are you sure the server is running? This is usually when you have typo'd the name or the server isn't running.

How big are these databases? Are there many schema changes?

Interesting suggestion. We can talk about it, but honestly we have to walk a line with the vendors. We don't give them exposure, they don't pay us, SSC goes away....

Here we have lots of servers and are always getting new apps.
HOWEVER, they are mostly small and they are of little impact. And most people don't do the testing....

That's a great point. If the server is running, but your database isn't, then is it up? Probably not.
You might be better off having some other process on another box...
