Good suggestions above, one other point. If the database grows during the insert, while it grows, ALL activity stops. That could be the issue. Has the extra long time occurred...

Is this SQL2000? checkdb runs better with this version, but it still takes some resources. It also runs for the whole db.

how are you running the DTS job? xp_cmdshell/dtsrun or sp_Start_job?

SQL will take as much memory as it needs and balance itself with other applications, though this can be slow. The OS should manage this, but it might not work...

sp_attach is one of the two best ways, depending on whether you can tolerate downtime. Backup/restore is the other.
Don't use the wizard, IMHO it doesn't work well.
