You don't need to write anything to get what you want. Just run the following and some of the things it returns are things like Min, Max, and Average...

I just converted my 558 column format file to ANSI, and imported it to a 558 column temp table
and it WORKED!

Did you test using the Clustered Index with the ORDER BY subquery? It seems to me that the ORDER BY Would enforce the order, but...
