Odd. Just ran that code against a SQL Server 2008 Express Edition database, and the VARCHAR(MAX) runs generally had higher CPU time but lower elapsed time than the VARCHAR(x)...

Of course, if you use that in a WHERE clause, there's no way an Index Seek will ever occur. The formula is deterministic so...
