I think logically that Gus's query using a CTE and your query using the derived table are the same.

You need to select a Join between the current and previous data, not separate inserts.
Something like:
select *
from #Current
full outer join #Previous
on #Current.InvoiceDate = #Previous.InvoiceDate;

So far as I know, you can't add buttons to reports. Reports are just data presentation. Would a link do what you need?

You don't select directly from the index. You select from the table.
If the index is appropriate, SQL Server will use it when you do that.

That wouldn't be it. At least not directly. I'm running SSRS 2008 on Win 7 on my desktop right now, and it works there.
