My first thought is that somewhere in the data flow there's a type conversion to datetime.
There's no other reason I can think.

Just use REPLACE(UPPER(@USEFILENAME),".TXT",".BAK") then you don't need to worry about case.

Tech guys said no Windows updates were installed.
