You need to select a Join between the current and previous data, not separate inserts.
Something like:
select *
from #Current
full outer join #Previous
on #Current.InvoiceDate = #Previous.InvoiceDate;

You don't select directly from the index. You select from the table.
If the index is appropriate, SQL Server will use it when you do that.
