The Beer Cooler Thread

  • L' Eomot Inversé (5/31/2012)

I drink some Dunkelweizen whenever I'm in Munich, ideally Schneider's Aventinus but it's not too much of a disaster if I accidentally go somewhere where they have Erdinger instead.

Here in Puerto del Carmen for beer I mostly drink Guinness.

And when in the UK I drink many different beers. One of the nicest is Fraoch.

    Pictures attached.

I decide not to use the first guiness picture google turned up - it's http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UWPtv2sE_x4/TlvXYDhieUI/AAAAAAAAAQU/LkCUC_2W_dQ/s1600/guiness.JPG for the curious.

Fraoch Heather Ale used to be available from Oddbins and the ale stall in Borough Market. From the bottle, it's very strange-tasting, like strong ale filtered through compost. Didn't like it at all, but I don't like Hobgoblin from the bottle either and it's very popular. On draught, it's gorgeous.

I think frites have been adopted by Belgium as its own national delicacy. Indeed, there's a song in the Europop tradition (sung in English) called It's Great to be a Belgian, with the following lines:

As I walk along the streets with my mayonnaise and frites

You can tell I'm as happy as can be

With my Duvel in my hand then you must understand

I'm a Belgian so nothing worries me

    John

    On their own? No moules?

It amazes me how a country with such a limited coastline should adopt a marine animal as it's national dish. Assuming moules et frites is the national dish...

French fries (or fritten as we call them) are often eaten alone or with a variety of snacks (usually fried meat, if you can call it meat).

Moules and French fries are popular in Belgium, but to call it the national, I would'nt go that far.

Actually, the best moules - Zeeuwse moules - are imported from the Netherlands.

  • I also heard it's been called the "wifebeater" in America because it makes the rednecks too drunk

ROFL!!! Now that is an urban myth over there. There are two major flaws with this concept. First, no self respecting redneck would drink "some fancy European beer". Secondly, the name is entirely too difficult to say. Why do you think "Bud" is popular in that crowd? Sadly even Bud and its ilk (there are tons of "beers" here in the states far worse than Bud if you can believe it) get the rednecks too drunk.

    Oh yes! You too Anthony.

Three days of beer and longbow.

    1 tequila, 2 tequila, 3 tequila, floor

  • Not fair Anthony...tequila is my favorite drink. At four, I'm ususally just getting started.

BTW - check out Tom T. Hall's song I Like Beer:

Just continue the count, and it will get you floored in due order. 😀

After floor, the next bits are "5 tequila, 6 tequila, 7 tequila, more"

Then it starts again from the beginning.

Many people fall down the second time "floor" is reached.

edit: after fouloor couln'tdn't spell "65"

I have an incredibly sophisticated palate when it comes to beer. My tongue knows how to throw a party for my mouth. If someone hands me an open beer, I'll drink it. If it doesn't taste good, I'll spit it out and then look for someone at the party who hasn't just spit theirs out and ask them what they're drinking. 😉

Heh... everyone picks on BUD. Is it the best beer in the world? Not even close but I'll have you know that I've never spit out a BUD even if it's too warm. 😀

  • So I had this lovely beer this weekend:

It's Grimbergen aka "the beer of the feniks" in it's blonde version.

It's an abbey beer and brewed by Alken Maes (not really my favorite brewery and it seems they were bought by Heineken.)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimbergen_(beer)

For the ones up to it, the Dutch wiki version has a better description 😀

Not the one I usually drink, but there was a sale of them at the supermarket, so I grabbed a whole bunch of them 😀

Looks like a Budweiser in a really cool glass. You didn't spit it out did you? 😛

  • How 'bout Sammy (Samuel) Smith's Oatmeal Stout? Around here (Kansas City), Freestate Brewing (Lawrence, KS) has an Oatmeal Stout that is really good, too (and a nice restaurant right on Mass Street to enjoy it in!).

A friend I used to work with created a sorghum-based beer called Bard's Beer that's good, especially if you're a celiac and can't drink other grain-based beers. I like it because it doesn't inflame my metabolic arthritis (AKA gout) the way most non-amber, non-stout types (like the swill that comes from St. Louis and Milwaukee) do.
