Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • I find myself amazed that there are three that carried through with that threat and it worked.

That is awesome. If I ever need to hold true to the threat - I will certainly do it with more ease of mind now.

Funny - exercising restraint to not use a 1-liner on that.

Brave man. Do you want us to consider it some kind of self-flagellation? 😀

As a parent, you always need to be ready to follow through on any threat that you make. And the sooner you do it, the sooner the kids learn. Think about it... if you are constantly telling them this, they learn that you are all talk and no action, and will continue to do the improper behavior. Carry through on the threat, and they change immediately.

I remember one time one of my kids was told to be ready to go somewhere in 10 minutes... we were leaving then. Well, in 10 minutes he only had his underwear on. We went anyway. When we got to where we were going, my wife handed him some clothes that were recently bought, but then he decided he didn't like. He was dressed in 5 seconds. Never a problem getting ready again.

You kids take this outside or I'm going to get my belt!

And then put on your pants?

    Alternatively

If you kids don't stop right now, you'll be going out to the willow tree to pick your own switch.

Actually, my first step-father was a flipping monster. He made me go & cut my own switch, on several occasions. I wouldn't do that to just about anyone.

I don't which is worse the fear walking out there to find the switch or the aftermath.

I couldn't do that to anybody either.

I saw some show a few years back...

Dad went out with the child, and they picked out at least a dozen switches. Different lengths / thicknesses, etc.

They then went into the child's bedroom, and started trying them out (on the bed). Analyzing whether they would hurt too much, or not enough.

During this time, Mom is terrified, hearing all the "swishing" and "smacking" going on...

In the end, child gets a very mild smack with the switch that (s)he selected.

And learned many lessons, including that Dad loved enough to ensure punishment was done, and loved so much as to ensure child wasn't beaten.

If you don't stop right now - I'm going to turn this car around and we will go right home. I mean it! :w00t:

Oh, another thing my wife and I would do. You know all those drop-in babysitting places near malls? Kids don't behave, they go there. Yep, we used them as punishment.

Please just stop - everybody. This kind of stuff is a drag and not the reason that many of us come to SSC.

On a sidenote, I now I have a longer and more technically accurate article than many.:w00t:

Okay, I have read ahead and will heed the warnings. I'll stop.

    I agree whole-heartedly.

We carry through with "threats." I just haven't had to carry through with that one..i.e. Settle down or I will turn this car around and go home. They know that I probably will.
