    Eirikur and Chris,

I'm in London all week, and free lunch times. Although today I'm waiting for the Royal Albert Hall booking line to open...

So let me know when you want to meet up.

    Rodders...

    Hi Rodders,

Wednesday would be the best for me.

    😎

Great, works for me as well.

    Let me know when.

  • Time for the annual voyage to a destination for my wife's holiday party. They really go all out!!! They always fly the employees to a location and pay for the hotel room. Spouses can tag along as long we get ourselves there. We get to enjoy a crazy holiday dinner party on Friday night. This year the theme is "Casino Night". For the second year in a row it is in Orlando. We are not taking the boys this year (last year nearly bankrupted us), but we are going to Epcot tomorrow afternoon. On Thursday I am hoping to be able to get out for a dive since my wife will be in meetings all day. Back home on Saturday.

Wow - very nice. Have a good time and enjoy the weather. It's about 35 F and raining here in southeast Michigan.

    25 and flurries in Mpls

Dived on an old freighter wreck once when down there.

Think is was near Boca Raton.

Nice easy dive, only about 30 feet down.

We were able to swim to it from the beach - no boat required.

Had a surprise going back - wind had picked up, and storm clouds were blowing in.

Snorkeling down in the Keys is fun too.

Although not really a day trip.

Going to be really cold and snowing here in KC staring tomorrow AM. Much warmer in Orlando but also quite below average there. The high on Friday is only about 58F. Thursday looks to be spectacular. High about 73F and sunny. Couldn't ask for much better weather. I have no vehicle so not sure yet how or if I will be able to find a dive anywhere. There are a couple options as Disney but they are stupidly expensive.

  • I sure wish JC would get off his high horse once in awhile. His constant diatribe about portability is a joke. Then he berates posters for not making things clear. Has he ever actually looked at his posts? They sure have the look of an archaic programming language that he constantly bitches about attempting to recreate in sql. Why does he try to recreate it in an HTML forum? Seriously...the leading ">>>" went away from nearly every forum ever somewhere around 1998 or so. He comes across as a crotchety old opinionated bastard who is contradicts himself over and over by demonstrating the he himself is guilt of the very things he can't believe somebody else is so stupid for doing. Sorry...needed to get this out. I really enjoy the last year or so where his venomous attacks and mindless ventures into things that nobody in the real world experiences was quite nice. Unfortunately it has ended and he is back.

I agree, Sean. He needs to put his white horse out to pasture and go quietly into the good night. I am just as tired of his constant diatribe on portability and only writing standard SQL. I don't care about the standard as much as I do about writing high performing and scalable code for the database engine I am currently using, be that MS SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or whatever.

Just how often do organizations change their underlying database systems?

I must agree with both of you. The illusion of portability is just that - an illusion. On the behavioral side, there's no reason to beat people up just because you can quote ANSI standards by number and excel at throwing a fit about column names. It only serves to turn people off and they don't learn anything.

If you have a chance, swing by Taverna Opa for lunch or dinner. FANTASTIC Greek food.

EDIT: And if you're a video game person and don't mind driving to Daytona, check out Blue Dragon. They also have a small collection of anime and there's a comic book shop next door.

  • This Saturday, 12/10, marks the anniversary of a very unhappy event for me. It's the day that Dwain Camps fell to cancer. Dwain was a remarkable author and, although I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, was an incredible long distance friend that I conversed with often. He had an incredible mind. He went from being a virtual neophyte at T-SQL to being a world recognized SQL Ninja virtually overnight.

Here's to you, Dwain. May your work and our memories of you last forever. You were a great man and a thoughtful and humble human. I miss you terribly. I hope there are fish at least as big as the one in your avatar where you're at now.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
