Are the posted questions getting worse?

No takers on the job description I posted a while back?

    Wrong country.

    and wrong state

Oh my. Now THAT would be fun having you in the area.

Man o man... yet another self-proclaimed DBA bites the dust in the interview process as has another self-proclaimed "expert" Database Developer. It amazing how they don't know what they don't know. I'm not asking difficult questions so far because none have gotten that far, yet.

The job looks really interesting, but just not interested in moving. Plus, I am trying to convince my supervisor to send me back to Afghanistan for 6 months in June next year.

I am curious. How many people have you interviewed who (though unqualified for this specific posting) know more than they realize they know?

Actually, I have another daughter going to head off to college next year and she is following her sister to Embry Riddle in Prescott, AZ. I need the money to pay for more college.

Here's a question, how many denizens of The Thread would you recommend hiring for this position without a technical interview? Just looking for a number, not names.

We can all assume we are in that number. 😀

    Yes minus 5

Actually and as impossible as it seems, there have been two and they're both wicked sharp. One was one of those self-trained Ninja's that never thought of herself as a "DBA" and yet she knew more about SQL Server and T-SQL than the last 8 candidates combined. It was a real pleasure to interview her. I also had the pleasure of interviewing Geoff Albin.

There are two types of "knowing what you don't know"....

Both knew of things that they didn't "know", which is a trait I look for. It means they had enough intellectual curiosity to find about the capabilities and caveats of certain things on the off chance they would someday need to use them but never actually used them and so couldn't actually answer any detailed questions on the features. Quite literally, they knew what they didn't know.

I also asked both some "what if" questions and both responded to the effect that they never thought of such a thing. Both also said for me to let them think for a minute and both actually knew how to pull it off without previously knowing how to do such a thing nor that such a thing even existed before.

Like I said, it was a real pleasure interviewing both of those folks.

I don't think I could make it past the janitor screen, let alone the resume read. 😀

I also interview really badly. I should work on that but if I get lucky I can retire (only a few years) before looking for a new job.

Bridge Guardian: What is your name?

    DJJ: Umm. I don't know?

    DJJ: AGGGGHHHHH!

Bridge Guardian: Sigh. Usually they get to the swallow question before they go flying off into the gully.

I know that quote very well. There are a few of us here at work who quote the movie from time to time.

The color is subjective, but the swallow question is a matter of weight ratios. 😉

  • Trying to reply to a post that I just put up in SQL 2008 -> Security and suddenly when I hit "post reply" it can't find sqlservercentral.com. So this is my attempt to post here and see if it's just me, or just that thread.

  • And apparently it's just that thread. How terribly annoying.
