Forever it won't dominate your destiny. Life there is after the dark side.I was going to wait until tomorrow night, but it is close enough.
I am resigning my position with Honeywell. I will be giving my two weeks notice tomorrow.
I have accepted a contract position through TEKSystems at Progressive Insurance here in Colorado Springs.
I already know that I have set some high expectations. I had a phone interview last Monday with two DBAs back in Cleveland. The thirty minute technical screening went really well, and I felt confident that I would get a call back for a second interview.
The next day one of the recruiters I was working with called me at work. When I called him back, he said thet weren't calling me back for a second interview, they were offering me the position.
Later that day I called back to ask a couple of questions and talked to the other recruiter I was working with, and she told me that the manager back in Cleveland simply said that they wanted me.
Definately going to be interesting. I am excited about getting to work with SQL Server again, but anxious as well.
Lynn, I'm very glad that you are moving back. I know you've been a bit unhappy there (what with being so close to the Dark Side and all). Seriously, I'm glad you're getting back to something that you like a lot better. Hopefully, this will mean that you will be out here on SSC a bit more also!

I wouldn't be too anxious. You've worked in SQL Server a lot in the past, and Oracle (that's what you live in lately right?) is more difficult. Plus you have concepts down - THOSE are the skills that are hard to find out there. Lots of folks know HOW to click a button oar check a checkbox, but they may not have a solid grasp on WHY.
So hopefully you can look forward to a new future adventure loaded with fun and interest and leave the anxiety behind.
Say, do they have a training budget to mail you off to The Summit? Or are you planning on paying for that yourself anyway? I'd love to meet you. Also, there is a SQLSaturday in OK later this month that I'm likely to attend. Will you drive to that?

Thank you Wayne, and I enjoyed your presentation tonight as well.
You know that code for concatenating strings, that was what I could not remember for the life of me when I was up interviewing for a position with Microsoft. Think you can send me that code snippet so I can put it on a flash drive for future reference?

Unfortunately, I won't make it to PASS this year, would have to pay for it myself, and supporting two households, the funds just aren't there. SQLSaturday in OK this month is to early with me starting the new position as well. Starting off contracting, so I need to start saving for those days I can't work. Interesting thing, as much as I didn't really like Honeywell, I never took a sick the entire year I have been there. Hope that keeps up at the new company.
I am definately hoping to be able to make it to PASS next year. Too many people that I call friends that I have never met in person.
As for the anxiety, I know exactly where that is coming from, getting the offer based soley off a 30 minute technical screening phone interview with 2 DBAs. I know I did really well during the interview, maybe even aced the questions. Makes me wonder how the other candidates did. Would have loved to been a fly on the wall during those interviews.
I am excited about getting to work with SQL Server again. It has been too long. I did learn some things working with Oracle (besides wanting to get back to SQL Server). Had to think about things in a different way, gives one a different perspective. However, in many ways, I think Microsoft has done a better job of implementing SQL in T-SQL. Things make more sense in how they are done.
So, thank you for the congratulations. Maybe one day we will finally meet. Hopefully sooner than later.

How do you make time to write? I have been writing(Planning to write an article) for a long time and I still havent finished yet.
I have to make a choice what is most important to me when it comes to deciding which activities to do in my free moments.
I write during breaks, during lunches, after work, and on weekends. I don't watch as much t.v. as I want to and I've had to cut back on my free-time book reading this year to get everything done. I try to get at least 500 words done a day and sometimes get up to 3k (if it's a workday) or 5k-6k if it's a non-work day.
It helps that I'm addicted to writing. I can't pass a day or two without writing something down, even if it's just a story idea or a character note. Plus, I'm getting paid for this stuff. If it were just fanfic, I'd be able to take my time. But I have deadlines to meet and people who depend on me to meet them. It's just like the day job and needs to be treated like it.

Congratulations Brandie. I know you don't go to a lot of conventions, but I hope to meet you at either a games con, SF/Fantasy con or SQL Server con some day. : -)
I'm going to Renovations WorldCon in Reno next week. I'll be at Dragon*Con on Labor Day weekend. Are you attending either of those or any SQL Saturdays in the Florida region?

Welcome back to the land of the living, ol' friend. 😀 I'm not surprised at all that it only took 30 minutes of talking with you for them to decide that you were "the one". Well done.
