Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Gianluca Sartori (8/5/2011)

    I'm officially out.

I'll never, ever be an employee again.

I'll punch my timecard for the last time in 1 minute.

This brings to the front of my thought processes something that I've been pondering on for a few months. What kind of help can people get in running their own consulting businesses? I've been thinking about peer help, like a forum here for people to talk about it, maybe some articles from those that are doing it on things that work and things that don't. Ideally, I'd even like to see something like the "Birds of a Feather" groups at conferences, similar to WIT. I know that I'm interested in this, but am scared to pursue anything - primarily about the drumming up business part.

For those of you that do consulting, and for those thinking about it, what do you'll think of this? Steve, what do you think of a forum area dedicated to this?

  • I would be interested in something like this as well. I wouldn't mind getting into some consultantsy type work. Scared as well having tried it for a short duration.

  • Someone obviously took exception with my opinion.

Hope my response wasn't too harsh.

    Edit: Fix typo.

Hope my response wasn't too harse.

    Harse or harsh? :hehe:

You're Your response was simply different from the one he wanted. Part of him wanted endorsement for something he felt was good for him and then also the community.

Your POV is that an MVP should basically forget himself and do it because it's the right thing to do.

Just from that you can't easily communicate because the core beliefs are completely opposed from one another.

Moreover he seems to have a little difficulty with the english language.

Don't get me wrong. I've been on both sides of the equation and I completely agree with your POV. Last week I had a 10 hour non-stop ride where I just couldn't stop answering question even if my brain wanted to do something else. I was like in a trance and it felt amazing, almost like Disney World.

I've also been on the other side where I've been here to expose myself to as many challenges as possible to "GET" more experience and it just doesn't feel the same.

The difference? 250 posts in trance mode in a day and barely, if ever, broke the 100 mark before that with the "normal" mindset. I also felt full of energy instead of tired and brain dead / fried.

It's a whole world of difference. I just hope that our Friend, or anybody else can live this joy, even if only once in there lifetime.

First, yes, I meant harsh. Must be brain dead still.

And yes, I have been there as well. I find it stimulating and fulfilling when you can help others. That is why I enjoy giving back to the SQL Server community and have missed being a part of it this past year. There just doesn't seem to be anything like it in the Oracle World, or I just haven't been able to find it.

Lynn, I completely agree with this.

... but I just have to say... "Resist the dark side of the force" 😀

(Looking forward to welcoming you back!)

I'm just the opposite. My posts get longer and a whole lot less frequent when I'm working with a code problem or two and in that "trance" you speak of.

You're response was fine as usual, Lynn. The OP wanted the "Make MVP in just 5 minutes a day." course. Frankly I'm surprised nobody called him on the "I will be an upcoming MVP in near future". That thread was worth reading just for everyone's thoughts on why people contribute their time to the benefit of others.

Actually, I think I did in my response. I asked others to tell me if I may have misinterpreted what he meant when he said "I will be an upcoming MVP in near future."

  • Obviously anything I have to say is going to be taken the wrong way.
