Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Grant Fritchey (5/17/2011)

True, but this one time, I'm taking the supposed high road. I've posted that I have sessions. I'm done. Vote or not. I'm in or not. I'd love to do a pre-con, especially the one Gail & I submitted together, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it one way or another.... much sleep.

I'm not sure it's the high road. Feels like that to me, but Andy W and I talked about this. Ultimately it's about helping market the event, and yourself to get people excited. It's about promoting the event more and getting buzz, as much as it is helping Grant.

So I think it's OK to send out some notes or blogs and promote things. It's absolutely critical for the Rally.

It's definitely an interesting situation. Yes, you are marketing you, but you are also marketing and generating buzz for the event. For SQLRally it was absolutely necessary because PASS didn't want to dilute it's messages about Summit. Let's face it, Summit is the revenue producer for PASS, so you can understand why promoting it is the most important thing to PASS.

I think it is an individual choice on how you hard you push for people to mark your session(s) as their preferred sessions. There is a fine line between being seen as pushy and doing enough to raise awareness. A couple of blog posts or tweets about it isn't too bad especially if you are phrasing things so that the you are presenting this new thing and, by the way, I have submitted sessions and you might want to select them. If I had submitted to the Summit I would probably have treated the preference tool like this in my blog:

Original post mentioning the tool and listing my sessions with a please select mine if you find them interesting.

Second post mentioning some sessions I had selected and why I had selected them. End the post with, don't forget I have submitted the following sessions, please consider them.

In neither case am I pushing my selections, but I am helping to market the event and the new tool, while still getting my sessions out there. I think that provides a nice balance that won't turn people off. It's really all in how you present it. If it's perceived like you are jumping up and down yelling "Pick me, pick me!" then you'll turn people off, but if it is low-key with an emphasis on this new thing that PASS is doing to encourage community involvement you'll probably get some good comments.

Since I have crossed the line in the past, I have a general sense of where it lies, and yeah, as long as you stay on one side of it, it's all good. It's still a question of how much noise are you going to make & I'm just quiet at the moment. For example, I'll probably be noisy in June leading up to SQL In The City.

All the US cities are in warm climates (usually) so I'd probably go to any of them. I wanted to go to Orlando but the timing wasn't right. (Except Denver in January)

I think we need to get them to Pheonix in July, then hold a SQLRally as a picnic. :Whistling:

Lol... but maybe Sedona and hold it in a sweat lodge.

What kind of sweat lodge? Old fat guys in tiny towels or smoking some silly weed?

There was an incident that happened in 2009 where a some people died and others were on the verge of death in a sweat lodge in Sedona, Arizona.

Besides this tradgedy sedona is a beautiful area, north of Phoenix. The area to me reminds me of being on another planet, the landscape is very distinct. The tempuratures in the summer are really nice, it makes a nice weekend getaway from the phoenix heat. It's only about an hour and 20 minutes from my house. Prescott, which is also nice and cool in the summer is only an hour. Flagstaff is 2. All three of these city are very different from what you'd expect to find in Arizona.

Is this that million-dollar-an-hour position you promised me last year? The one with the month per year vacation in Tahiti perk?

Is one of the perks a daily allowance at Jeni's ice cream?

No, but then I also can't tell my fiancee. : -)

Jeni's is one of the things that makes it worth visiting Columbus.

I used to live there for a little while, I'll see if I still have any SQL Server contacts in the area. Of course, I lived there in the mid-90s (worked for CompuServe for awhile), so I'm not too hopeful.
