Learning the G1

,

One nice thing is that the G1 has a good browser, basically the same technology as the iPhone, so I can look up how to do things. A few things I’ve searched out that have worked well:

Menus – This key is highly context sensitive. You need to highlight things and then press this to see what happens.

Pairing with my Plantronics Headset – didn’t work at first, but I browsed the settings for the headset.

Deleting Bookmarks – go to the bookmarks, “long press” or “press and hold” an entry to get a menu of choices. Delete is at the bottom.

Changing the Google Account – There’s an account associated with the phone. No way to change this without a soft reset to factory defaults (Under Settings –> SD Card)

Notifications – The top bar of the G1 typically shows the connections strength, bluetooth, etc. However when anything happens, I get new Tweets, voicemail, miss a call, SMS, etc., there’s an icon that appears, actually multiple ones, in that top bar. I can press on it, drag it down, and see all the notifications. Plus if I click on one of them, I go to that app for the info. Way easier and smoother than my Windows Mobile Dash.

And they're always there.

Overall, I think this is the best, and most convenient phone for me to use. I haven't used an iPhone, but I have an itouch, and this has many of the very convenient features of that. It's easy to use, the touch screen/trackball combination is way better than my Sidekick. It seems more stable, handles apps better, and switches between them better than my Windows Mobile 6 Dash. It still does things in the background, and it doesn't crash.

I will say that it's not completely untuitive how things work, and it does take some learning, but the Google search is always there.

It does have some downsides. A couple hours of web work will eat up a lot of battery. It's not loud (for me, but I'm slightly deaf) and hard to hear at times. The dialpad sometimes is hard to get up on the phone (press menu in call, then pull it up).

It does have better reception. I get an Edge connection + 2-3 bars in my house out in the country. Never had edge with the Sidekick or Dash until I got close to town.
