Actually there is a fork of MySQL 5.5 that supports ANSI-2011, PL/SQL, and T-SQL 2012. In addition to that, it has distributed scale out capability.Nice

If you liked Snow Crash you should check out Cryptonomicon or Anathem.Stephenson is great.
Cryponomicon is great. Anathem, not so much.
