Even dumb phones broadcast connections to cell towers, and those can be used to triangulate your location pretty well. Not like GPS, but closer than most of us might like....

We're finding that as well. I'm hoping we try something to help random conversations. We've talked about leaving a meeting open for people to randomly join.

Could this be concurrency somehow? A SELECT should have an implicit transaction during which it runs, so I'm not sure why this changes things.

AFAIK, xp_fixeddrives hasn't been supported for some time. Other XPs are.
dm_os_volume_stats is what I'd use.
