You backup the tail of the log if you are having issues with your database and are about to restore. It's a normal log backup.

Monitoring solely off an iPad, Xoom, etc isn't the use case. It's an additional way to monitor, which can be handy if you aren't near a desktop/laptop.

Just so we're clear, we're not talking about any user. XP will work fine for client applications. It won't run the SQL Server tools or dev edition.
