after getting some feedback from other people that this may be a complicated mousetrap and that the AG is really at the server level not the instance level

Thanks for the quick response.Its currently has 5 instances, 1 of which is Analysis services. It also (don't know why as its 2008 cluster) has MSDTC as a resource.

get your storage admins to replicate\mirror the LUNs, then when youre rerady swap them over, you'll need an outage on the cluster role to perform this

Install new active/passive cluster with 2014, migrate current db to that box.
This will have a Failover Cluster Instance of SQL Server, correct?

the clusters have no bearing here, they're merely providing resilience for each of the mirror instances at the instance level. Treat the 2 instances as exactly that, 2 sql server...
