Have you PHYSICALLY been in the room with that server with a screen looking at what's going on?
Lots of possible culprit would be visible from there. Especially with reboots...

I don't know about the shutdown, but I can say for sure that you're way overdue to run checkdb!

The backup will keep running without blocking anything else (short of slowing other disk operations).
The backup contains the db image at the time of the END of the backup.

Well database growing = longer backups. Nothing weird there.
I'd make sure the hds are fixed before alarming everybody and their spouses.
Any reasons you can't let the backup finish? ...

AFAIK there's no dmv for that (can you imagine all the ram it would take to log all that).
That's why traces where invented. I'd go with the default trace...
