    Yes.  You can backup the Master database, but only a full backup.  You cannot do a transaction log backup on Master.

    More than likely your maintenance plan is attempting to back up the transaction log for the Master database.  Only FULL backups can be taken of Master.  Try removing Master from your maintenance plan...
