You're also using a GROUP BY as a replacement for DISTINCT. That usually means that the criteria is insufficient for the job.

If you have to do the conversion anyway, maybe convert through HASHBYTES??? It's not quite a guarantee of things that are identical but, if the result of hasbytes is different,...
