It sounds like they don't really know databases at all because they don't really understand that SQL is not SQL and that taking care of the servers for different RDBMS's...

When one wants no NULLs in the output, is it not faster to put that in the base FROM "derived table", view, or query... the same as mentioned when...

RE: Covering index is too long, but needed ... what to do?

So... after you added the index, did you get index seeks or just scans? Also, never trust the execution plan by itself... did you turn statistics on or run...
