  • RE: The Numbers Table

    jacroberts (11/27/2008)

Ok, I have recently written some code that uses an RBAR TVF to increase the efficiency and speed of a query.

    Here's my example:

    We had a table of...

  • RE: Functio to get Amount in words.

For the most part, Yes. On concatenation of such a small number of parts, not really.

  • RE: Functio to get Amount in words.

Very cool code, Chris... your' guy's efforts made me finish up what I started and it looks nothing like the original code I posted... I couldn't stand the fact that...

Here's a 2k/2k5-friendly version with a permanent lookup table. It translates 30,000 numbers from a standard tally table, in both SQL Server versions, in about 4 seconds.

    Ummm......

And two, someone is going to come along and see your code in your RBAR TVF and use it somewhere else and it won't be effecient at all.

    Heh......

Good article, but let's take another approach and see what we see.

Heh... you beat me to it, again. 😉

What I was refering too is the lack of ROW_NUMBER() in SQL Server 2000. This means you'll either have to take your chance with IDENTITY, at the risk...

  • RE: can i improve performance in this query

    Peso (11/27/2008)

The query returns 290 columns and joins 62 tables. Under these cirumstances I think 7 seconds is quite good.

    Ditto.

  • RE: Knowledge sharing

Mannie, thanks for posting the article... your points are well taken and the appearance of the article is actually very timely for me. It gave me a chance to...

And Jeff makes a good point too. Not enough of you guys get credit for posting knowledge...

    Hear, hear. 🙂

But I think we all owe thanks to folks...

Heh... then there's the "intelligent" ones that say things like "performance" doesn't matter and will argue for hours about it. The only reason why I continue...

Manie makes some very good points. I wish SQLServerCentral had been around in 1994 when I started working with SQL Server.

And Jeff makes a good point too....

...and - we're doing it again. By virtue of this thread alone - we're HIGHLIGHTING the "ugly threads" which mean they get more facetime, and (probably) more...

  • RE: random randomise randomize data query

Yep... try getting the TOP 10 random rows from a big table that way... hell to pay for performance. Be careful how you use it for that reason.
