De-serialization tasks need to work exactly in reverse to the serialization, which is:
Empty array/set/list --> NULL
One empty string or ID --> ""

You have to trust me when I say that I already know the OUTER APPLY work around so, ultimately, it doesn't matter which way they go on the NULL thing...
