ooops feel stupid now!
i had another stray sql task hidden from view also passing vales to the same varaible
apols, all fixed now 🙂

apols i forgot to reply to close thread,
i got it working eventually, had to logon as local admin and reapply security etc and all is working again

nothing seems unusual when i query these
there must be some service/folder/database that i need to reapply the service account credentials to?

and perfect i have found the culprit! a 3rd party has for some reason decided to run random sql log backups in the middle of...

no thats the thing, i am not missing any backups, no other backups are running
and strangely it will allow me to restore the last log file restored before...
