A very interesting article, explaining the concept very well.
+1 on Chris Simon's question though. I ran both versions and the equivalent query using the function and got 3 identical execution...

Fantastic work, thank you. I have implemented this and it works flawlessly. I needed to tweak the XML slightly to get the versions report to work but no big deal...
