Dave, i guess the sample data made confusion.. the cost can be anything, say 1, 4, 7, 11, 13, 12, 22,27, 75,43 etc etc any integer number..

I would guess that the time is being taken by the ALTER TABLE and UPDATE Statements not the cursor itself.
Try proving this use the Statement Trace in SQLProfiler.

This is nonsensical, there is no BLANK value for a smallint. There is NULL or a Value.

sp_executesql will not run the command asynchronously. It will wait for completion before returning.
Why do you believe that that is not the case ?
