Yes, READ UNCOMMITTED can be the right choice for many applications, the problem comes when it is selected and it isn't appropriate and people start complaining about inaccurate data. Which is what usually happens when people start adding the NOLOCK hint everywhere in their code without considering the impact it may have on the output generated and its purpose.Yes, it needs to be used with great care. It just frustrates me when the argument swings too far the other way and using READ UNCOMMITTED becomes dogmatically evil and incorrect in all circumstances. I refuse to call it NOLOCK by the way - the name is the source of much misunderstanding, and is also far too easy to type 😉
I actually like the .NET name for it ("chaos"), even over read uncommitted! It's at least accurate in that it's not without some risk.....

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

Wow...that brings back some really old memories...first time I came across the 'chaos' synonym was when using DAO and Visual Basic 4!
I believe that 'chaos' is an available isolation level in an SSIS package.

Add to that the fact that he wasn't too crazy about doing it in the first place and you've got a real winner. 🙁
Hang in there Steve.

I can't believe I left a perfectly good country behind 🙁
I made it, a definitely journey from hell. Last year (2009), I had an only slightly less arduous journey, getting stuck overnight in Chicago. If anyone sees my bag on their travels today, burgundy, green luggage tag, tell United I'd appreciate it getting sent to me.

Sorry to hear you had such a bad trip, but at least you're in the land of good pubs and great beer.

Maybe I misunderstood, but this sure looks to me like someone asking how to hack SQL Server. Am I way off?

Well, I get to tell stories about riding a horse home through the woods at 40 degrees below zero with enough wind-chill to make spit freeze before it could hit the ground, at night, in a blizzard. Unfortunately, it was only uphill one way, but it was after school, so that counts for something. If I'm telling that one, and you're telling a story about, "I went outside and it was pleasantly warm", guess which one will get more attention in most audiences.
So what about the story of walking outside and the heat hitting like a hammer, sweat evaporating before it hit the ground? No need to start a fire to cook breakfast, a frying pan placed on the sidewalk got hot enough to fry eggs and bacon.
No, it doesn't get quite that hot here. 6 hours drive north (Messina), it does.
Hottest I've ever been was Death Valley in August. I was 9 years old, weighed about 60, maybe 70 pounds (around 30 kg for the rest of the world), and drank over 2 gallons (about 7 litres) of water that day, without needing to urinate even once. We had apples in a brown paper bag on the shelf under the back window the car, and they baked.
But the place I lived where it got below zero every winter, it also went up to about 115 F (46 C) every summer. As I used to express it, we had a meter or two of snow in the winter and a meter or two of dust in the summer, and mud in between.

I would ask for comments (solicit) from those on the thread on the following suggestion for increasing the reception and improvement of the Question Of the Day (QOD).
http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic887478-4-1.aspx
It is my feeling that the QOD is an excellent teaching tool / test of knowledge and I have been some what perturbed at the harsh, piddling comments made on many of the QODs.
Your comments / assistance will be appreciated.

My main subjects of conversation so far today have been politics (Obamacare passed the House late yesterday), or my re-wedding (wife and I did a renewal of vows on Saturday).
I'm saturated on politics, but if you're interested in the ceremony, I could write about that.
