As Grant said, use the DMOs. I also like the suggestion of using sp_whoisactive by Adam Machanic.
Activity Monitor, if left open can be a pretty resource intensive utility. ...

Similar to what cadavre did, I recommend looking at some "internships" or "freelance" work. Work on a project that can be posted on your resume and help build those...

Linked Servers are not typically used for management and automation type tasks like CMS (Central Management Server).
CMS provides a "central" repository/group of servers to which you can administer/manage.
