The End of Azure Data Studio

  • Is there an article somewhere that explains how to make VS Code work like Azure Data Studio?

Either I'm doing it completely backwards or I'll just stick with some antiquated software that actually works.

(or is that on the menu, just after making the PowerQuery source work in SSIS?)

  • While I do not use ADS for development purposes, I do like the notebook aspect and its ability to connect to Postgres. I found the notebook interface an excellent tool for demonstrations especially during presentations. I would love to find a similar notebook based alternative.

  • This seems like a sensible move, it will mean that I don't have to try to side port extension files for VSCode into ADS to get the code editing features that I want. I have tried to install the mssql extension but it appears to be a "little buggy" at the moment by which I mean it threw a JavaScript error, crashed, and wouldn't restart, forcing me to reinstall VSCode.

It will also mean that there are less tools to support, although they could go the whole way and just use Visual Studio Community Edition with extensions instead, they've got to find money to pump into all of the pointless and unwanted "AI" features from somewhere.

I hope that this means that we will get a more cohesive development experience where third party developers don't have to choose which platform to support (ADS or VSCode), but it's just as likely that in two years time VSCode will be discontinued for yet another latest, greatest, shiniest, new product.

  • Aargh, just got used to Azure Data Studio with its easy exports to CSV, JSON, Excel ...

  • such a shame they wasted all those years of development time SSMS still needed and needs to comply with modern development needs

    Well said

  • No disappointment here. Think how much better SSMS could be if those hours were invested there. VS2022 is the most unstable version of VS I have ever used. JetBrains Rider and JetBrains DataGrip. Two tools that get it right.

  • SSMS could benefit from an integrated extension marketplace similar to what is in ADS and VSCode.

  • If you used Azure Data Tools for documenting or explaining what the data is saying, what do you use now? Can I cheat and use good old Jupyter Notebooks?

I agree with you, Aaron, I'd love to find a good notebook interface, now that ADS is going away.

  • I am one of those who love using Azure Data Studio, so this announcement is sad news for me. When I mentioned that ADS has been retired in my team meeting today, two other developers screamed in anger. Well, I guess it's on to use mssql extension in VS Code.

  • If you like the query results in VS Code below your query

Go to Menu > View > Editor Layout > Flip Layout.

Or 2025, as it's known in the rest of the world. 🙂
