SQL Server Job/Volunteer

  • Iam in the process of changing my career. I recently completed hands-on SQL server 2017 in Database Administration training. I've practiced a lot and am now available to start my new career but the problem is I'm not finding any entry level job. I like the DBA role. I am ready to volunteer too but could not able to find one. I have basic knowledge and I am continually building my technical skill working on my machine, within my limit I have also try to simulate industrial scenarios and see how to solve them. I've read, watch(youtube) and practise on through:

    ·         SQL Server Installation, Upgrades, Migrations and Configuration.

    ·         Set up database infrastructure with optimal configurations.

    ·         Designing and creating databases, tables, views, stored procedures, functions, indexes & other DB objects.

    ·         Performance Tuning using Index Management, Files and File groups, CTEs, Full-Text Search and Expert in using client components like SSMS, SQL Server Profiler and Database Engine Tuning Advisor (DTA).

    ·         Setting up Notifications & monitoring jobs using DB mail/Job Activity Monitor.

    ·         Migrating SQL Server Databases from lower to higher versions. Encrypting databases using Transparent Data Encryption (TDE).

    ·         Preventing unauthorized access to data by creating logins/users/roles/ schemas.

    ·         Scheduling different types of backups for the user created databases in the production environment using the Database Maintenance Plan Wizard.

    ·         Implementing HA-DR including Log Shipping and Database Mirroring for automatic failover. Administering SQL Server High Availability and Disaster Recovery strategies.

    ·         Configuring Windows Failover Cluster, SQL Clusters & Always-On Availability Groups. Creating Users in AD and Mapping to SQL Users.

    ·         Provisioning SQL Server Databases and VMs in Azure.

    ·         Creating and scheduling jobs to store database backup files on to Azure storage containers. Troubleshoot and resolve database connectivity issues.

    ·         Monitor and maintain database storage resources.

    ·         Perform database Ad-hoc backups and restores.

    ·         Optimize SQL code as necessary.

    ·         Installing and Configuring SQL Server instances.

    ·         Diagnosing Database and Service failures.

    ·         Worked with System Activity Monitor and SQL Server profiler.

    ·         Creating Files and File groups using GUI & CLI.

    ·         Creating, Scheduling and Monitoring Jobs, Alerts, Notifications.

    ·         Auditing long running queries. Setting up Data Collection to monitor Server Activity, Database Sizes and Query Statistics.

    ·         BI Stacks: SSIS, SSAS and SSRS

I believe I need a little help on my first step. Can anyone let me know where and how can I find/start as Jr. DBA. If anyone need any extra help please let me know. I'm willing to commute unto 2hrs from Hackney London.

  • Why stop being a DBA?

The line is blurring between Data Administrator and Keeping Data Integrity secured (by extension System Security). Data or System Security has more future than DBA. I started with Oracle 7 and now most database can self administer, however, I still would not fly Boeing 777 Max on Autopilot across the pond. I guess the world will still need DBA to keep an eye on the database and keep the light on. With Security, you have wider outlook. A DBA cant become an Executive. You will always be a techie. Security Analyst can become CISO. What if that new business initiative you green lighted after completion of your Risk Assessment took off successfully? Plus as a Security Analyst, you liaise with executives and business units owners all the time.

    Just my 2 cents

  • @tekpr00 I will consider your recommendations.

But I just recently acquired SQL DBA skill  I am excited and willing to join a team, to learn, grow and contribute.

Just want to start first, the pay or commute is less important to me now. I just want to get my hands on.

Anyone with openings for persons like me or knows how I should also go about it, I am very open to advise.

  • Sign up for your local user group, go to the next meeting, and talk to people.  There'll be people there who are looking for people to work for them.  Good luck!

    John

  • @john-2 Mitchell, Thank you. I sure will.

Hence, I am back to where I started.

I seeking for a Junior SQL DBA role, I have being on the looking for a little while now.  Most receruiter are seeking for persons with minimum of 1year industry industry experience.

So getting a place to start with the recruiting agents is a bit difficult.

Anyone with openings for persons like me or knows how I should also go about it, I am very open to advise.  I am excited and willing to join a team, to learn, grow and contribute. I am will to commute upto 2hrs daily and pay is not my emphasis. I just want to start.

Looks like the London PASS Chapter may be having problems.  Their last meeting was in June and they've not really been keeping up the Pass website very well.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
