Passed the 70-433 exam!

  • Today I passed the 70-433 exam with a pretty good score: 970.

To be honest, I'm in between jobs and I had a little more than 2 full weeks to prepare, so you must really screw up not to pass.

The questions themselves were not that hard (again, bear in mind that I had studied a lot). There were less questions then expected (and I guess that's all I can say without breaking some regulation) and there was plenty of time provided.

What did I do for preparation:

    * read the self-paced training kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0735626391/ref=cm_li_v_cd_d. This book covered most topics pretty well, but the final chapters are more of a summary and didn't have enough detail. I'm specifically talking about XML (openxml and xpath in particular), service broker, dmv's, sql server profiler, powershell, cdc/change tracking/audit and the database tuning advisor. But overall, pretty OK.

    * made the practice test included in the training kit. This is done pretty well, lots of questions and most of them were more difficult then the ones on the exam (in my opinion). I did the test in custom mode with the answer being shown if I asked for it or if I made mistake. If I doubted or got it wrong, I would read the links provided by the answer. This really helped in my preperation.

    * read a lot of articles in BOL, especially syntax and the remarks.

    * read some interesting articles found on this website (mostly from Gail Shaw and Jeff Moden)

    * answered a lot of question of the day's at this website

    * some time ago I followed the 6232A Microsoft course http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/Course.aspx?ID=6232A&Locale=en-us. Like the self-paced training kit, it covered most subject, but didn't really go into details.

A good blog post with a lot of links to msdn pages for every objective of the exam:

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
