Creating a connection string

  • I was following the instructions found here but had a problem and don't know what is causing it.

    http://www.sqlservercentral.com/columnists/awarren/introductiontotheadoconnectionobject.asp

I created an application role on the database.

Using the Data Link Properties dialog I chose the provider.  Then on the Connection tab, I had to type in the Server name because it did not appear in the combo box or drop down menu.  I don't know if that was the first problem or not.

I put in the application role name and password under "Use a specific user name and password:"

    I checked Allow saving password.

When i got down to number 3, "Select the database on th server," I clicked the combo box and got an error: "Login failed for user 'FAELOGIN'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."

Then another message box displays: "Login failed.  Catalog information cannot be retrieved."

I don't know why i'm alway running into these stupid issues!

  • See if this can solve your problem:

  • Thanks man! I thought it had worked but it didn't.  My server still says LOCAL it does not have my server name in Enterprise Manager.

When i click the drop down arrow in Data Link Properties it still doesn't show.

If i cut and pasted the connection string from elsewhere will it work or does this mean it will not work?

  • Thanks for the site. I'm going to give it a try.

  • Thanks a million!  The connect string worked without any problems (using my login at least). Now i have to see if it will use my application role that i set up.

  • Glad to be able to help. Have a great day !
