Thanks for the great idea for a blog post:Thanks for both the affirmation of fears on the topic as well as path to take. I have already begun down the path described after "Stopped crying? Other options are to..."
I hate to say, but you're asking the wrong guy. I got my start because I was writing articles. Chat with some of the others. They may have a more structured approach.
I was just saying that you described the path that I started down. I think it is a good path to choose.
Ooops. Misread the placement on the quotes. And that's why we have people who can actually read, speak and write English doing the editing for us.
If you haven't submitted anything to Tony Davis at Simple-Talk, head on over there. His editing process can feel a bit like a prison rape, but you'll really learn a lot.

Checking into that currently. Took a bit to find their article submission page. I don't typically read the links at the bottom of a page.

When will we see books from Jack, Lynn and Gus?Would like to write one, just not too sure about what to write. Some people can write with ease, not so much for me.
Might I suggest a topic? DBCC TIMEWARP 😉

When will we see books from Jack, Lynn and Gus?I've considered it, but I've also talked to people who have done it (Grant being one) and I don't think I have the ambition/energy to do it based on those conversations. I would be interested in doing some tech editing and have made myself available to do that for the SQL Server Standard.
One day I may work on a chapter or 2 and then move forward.
For anyone who is interested in doing a book, I think doing a a book for Simple-Talk would be a great place to start.
Yeah, I'd start with SimpleTalk too. Tony Davis is a great editor and he doesn't get all wound up on the schedule, so you have time to do the book correctly as opposed to fast. I don't think writing a book is the only entry path or even a sure one, but it helps get you in the door at the conferences, and I think presenting at those is a pretty major piece of the puzzle.
We'll see though. I'm up for renewal and won't know for six more weeks.
You guys all seem to know the process very well. It was obvious that Grant would know (having done it a few times).
How does one get associated to a printing company to write a book?
How does one become an Editor / Reviewer / Researcher for the Standard?
One day I think I would like to write a book, but think I would prefer to start out by working on a book with somebody else. How does one find other people to co-author a book?
And really, is it open game for pretty much any topic when writing the book? Are there certain topics to avoid?
I only know about it from talking with Grant, Ken Simmons (Pro SQL Server 2008 Administration Wrox), Kevin Kline. I also talked with Tony Davis quite a bit last June at SQLSaturday - Pensacola, and then again at the Summit.
Like I said and Grant seconded, Simple-Talk and Tony Davis are a good place to start. Another is to just call a publisher like Wrox. I know people that have done that as well.

You know something, I'm soon going to be tech-editing something that Tony's written. Revenge is sweet....

Oooooh! Kick him once while he's down for me.
Tony is the nicest guy, except for his editing.

Barry is another one that I would be quite happy for should he become a MVP. He's done a lot as well and deserves the recognition.
Thanks, Lynn. I'm afraid I've never even been nominated though. Heh, maybe next year ... 😀

Hard to say. Grant nominated some one from SSC, and of course he isn't naming any names at the moment.

So many good SSC candidates though.
I am afraid that I am not a good candidate right now because my illness has dropped my MVP-relevant output to almost nothing for the last 6 months. Unless, they'd take that into account and only count the 12 months, before I got sick, they look pretty good on paper. 🙂
