    Hi folks,

sorry to post my reply to Lynn's "RFS" (request for sainthood) that late but I had to do some research and also had to BABELate my thoughts - since U.S. English isn't my first language...

    Back to Lynn's post:

The Wiki definition of sainthood (or saint) is:

"In most religious cultures, there are people who have been recognized within that culture as having fulfilled the highest aspirations of religious teaching."

So, first, we have to consider that forum as a culture. Fine with me anyway 🙂

Second, we have to accept working with SQL Server is a religion. I assume most of the forum members might agree. I do/could/would.

Third, a majority ( 50% + 1 person = 500.001 as per today) of the forum would recognize Lynn as having "fulfilled the highest aspirations of religious(=SQL) teaching". Most probably, if not definitively, true.

Conclusion: Lynn, among others (but still a minority 🙂 ) would qualify for sainthood!

But let's have a look at some other Wiki-def's:

    Masochism

Masochism refers to[...] gratification in the infliction of pain or humiliation upon oneself.

Don't you think that - referring to a few "special" posts- Lynn (and the other folks, qualified for sainthood) wouldn't qualify for masochism either????

    Last but not least:

    being Sisyphean (again from Wiki)

Today, Sisyphean can be used as an adjective meaning that an activity is unending and/or repetitive. It could also be used to refer to tasks that are pointless and unrewarding.

Definitely most of the guru's reply's fall into the category of unrewarding/unending/repetitive and none of them are pointless. So, being Sisyphean wouldn't count as long as we use "pointless" in the original meaning. But, if we "slightly" change the meaning to "the point made is not accepted by the OP", then the number of guru's that would qualify increases dramatically...

So, Lynn, what are you requesting for?????? (Btw, SORRY, it's not a multiple choice....)

    ----------

Another thought regarding the "Spanish issue":

Is there any intention to become multi-langual in this forum?

If yes, we could test the data structure behind if it's capable of correctly storing and displaying e.g. Arabian or Asian letters/signs 🙂

    ----------

Finally, I'd like to thank all of you folks for "lightening up my mind" in the past and hopefully in the future! You helped saving hours/days/weeks of Sisyphean work!!!

    Regards,

    Lutz

    Wow.

This thread provides a place hang out, gripe, and pad our post counts while we wait for an interesting question to come along.

Didn't feel like cutting the quote above down to the relevent part, but regarding multi-langual. I have at times truly considered learning Spanish. Not to be able to help people here on SSC, but to help me on pitch while officiating soccer (football everywhere else in the world). I would love to know what many of the players are saying, especially when they are talking to me with a smile on their face. I would really like to know if they are cursing me.

Okay, if I learned Spanish for that, it would also help me here and elsewhere as well.

Oh, and why couldn't I be a Sisyphean Masochistic Saint?

There have been times it has seemed pointless to continue, but it is those 1 or 2 threads where the OP finally gets it that truly makes it worth it all.

  • What are the odds of this thread evolving into SkyNet? I have children and I am worried about their future.

The point is very well taken and qualifies you for saintness!

    ---

"Oh, and why couldn't I be a Sisyphean Masochistic Saint?"

The difference might be the goal each one tries to achieve (no written sources for backup):

The Sisyphean does it "hoping he will succeed some day for his own success",

the masochist "because he like's it, no matter how hard it hurts",

and the saint "because she/he believes in the success of at least one of his/her attempts".

I don't think these goals are additive...

But at this point it becomes a little too philosophical for me to continue... Most probably there are more knowledgeable folks around - if it matters at all...

Should Michael Earl be worried that a terminator will be sent back in time to stop him from making the original post?

Okay, then that probably means this thread is highly visable on Google, right??

Yup...especially witht he high amount of replies in short amounts of time.

Note to self: insert reference to "fibre-optic laser beam assemblers" in future articles. Just because. 😀

Now, will those be the wizbang version or just the standard?

We've given it way too much knowledge. TSQL Performance Tuning, Weapons, Martial Arts, Language... we've dumped it all into this one thread and laced it with sarcasm & a bit of vitriol... We might be in serious trouble.
