Under a week...you're really close. I'll bet you're beyond ready to come home.
Just hoping that the weather clears up for my homecoming.
Do you mean the weather there or here? It seems like different parts of this country have been locked in a holding pattern of really cold or really snowy. There are some areas that are nice, but what's been making the news lately is the deep freeze and mountains of snow. It's cold again here in Michigan this morning at -4 F. Yesterday felt like a heat wave at 28 F.
As of right now (about 8:00 PM Afghan time); here, in route (Dubai will probably be okay but I won't be leaving the Airport), and upon arriving at home.

I forget what part of the country you're flying home to, but it looks like in around 6 days the temps will start going up and staying up.

Short-timer!
My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?
My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

Safe travels, Lynn. There's a lot of weather in the U.S. that could be crimping your flight style after you hit Atlanta. Hopefully it'll clear up by the time you come in.

Just curious... does anyone use RedGate Compare to promote code from Dev to Staging to Prod? Looking for both positive and negative comments on experiences. Thanks folks.

We use RedGate Compare to build the upgrade schema scripts. It works well, but if you ever need to do a line by line check of the code it is a real pain in that related database objects aren't always together. This could be a result of the database design itself. I won't go into details other than to say a Database Developer/DBA was not involved in its development.

I have in the past, similar to what Lynn is doing. At my current job we don't have a process, but are looking to move toward SSDT database projects and the publish model that it provides which is very similar to using RedGate SQL Compare. We used SSDT Database Projects in my previous position.
If you are looking for a method to deploy database changes I'd definitely take the time to talk to RedGate about what they are doing in the database deployment and continuous integration space.

Thanks folks. Has anyone any particular pleasantries that have occurred from Dev to Stage to Prod with RedGate Compare?
@Lynn...
Are you saying that you had to make some tweaks to the RedGate code?

My last company purchased Redgate Compare after initially trying to go with XSQL Compare. XSQL Compare was significantly cheaper, and did most of what we were looking for. The idea was to promote Development Code to QA without having to do a restore and wipe test data. XSQL had some issues with compatibility that we did not notice originally. Basically it would fail to script out correctly because of constraints, and the software could not get past that no matter what we tried. We may have all missed the right settings to fix this, but it became such an annoyance that they decided to buy Redgate's version instead. Redgate could drop and recreate constraints to get the data where it belonged. I didn't get a lot of use out of the program before I moved to another company, but it seemed very effective. Just use the trial time heavily before you buy.

The code generated by SQL Compare works great. The problem I actually ran into with preparing for our latest upgrade (happening in just a couple of days) was that our current theater tech lead wanted me to go through all the SQL code to ensure that things were good, and running in the correct parts of the upgrade process.
This actually made me start splitting out code into separate files (17 in this particular case) so I could easily make comparisons in the code to be sure we had matching draft/published tables for reports, that primary keys were properly declared, and such. Since the RedGate Compare had this code all through the script, that was the only way I could make the necessary validations. Technically, all of this should have been done back in CONUS.
The MasterSchemaUpgrade script, after all the work I went through, was good. I actually ran into issues with our data upgrade scripts. We have two different scripts, one for the (replication) hub and another to be run on all servers. The difference in these are that the hub data upgrade replicates out to the spokes where as the data upgrade script for all servers inserts/updates/deletes data that is not replicated.
The hub data script contained both data that would replicate and would not. The all servers data script contained schema changes that were also contained in the master schema upgrade script (this script is run on all servers as well since DataXtend does not replicate schema changes).
