Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Michael Earl (11/18/2008)

Is it me, or are the posted questions getting worse these days?

I just read a post by someone apparently in charge of something who was asking how to take a database backup and restore it on another server.

It seems like the general feeling of a lot of DBA's (term used loosely) these days is that they do not need to learn anything by reading or studying and they should simply post questions without doing any work themselves. I would expect that they can click the search button at least once before posting a question in a forum.

Anyone else disappointed lately, or am I just getting bitter?

Yep, I agree with you bud. However that's the way it goes on a public forum.

Don't get bitter about it. Just pay more attention to the posts that matter.

I think you'll find there's a certain amount of "tongue-in-cheek" color to the responses of the kind of posts you're describing. Yes the responses are helpful (still), maintaining a certain professional integrity. But the responders here also do a good job of saying (in a certain tone) to "RTFM" 🙂

  • It snows here as well occasionally. Not down in town, but on the mountains surrounding Cape Town (occasionally some slush on Table Mountain too, but rarely). When it DOES snow, the whole of town is off into the mountains, creating major traffic jams, blocked roads, accidents and whatever else can be associated with alien weather.

What I had never seen before I got here quite a few lents ago was that people were building snowmen and putting them on their bonnets or in the back of their bakkies (pick-ups). Really cute.

  • That's cool and sort of lovely, Gail. Thanks for sharing.

"codingsanity" - sounds like an oxymoron. Sanity is what you have BEFORE coding. If you're lucky, you still have a shred left after coding. Artificial languages for artificers?

Nice pix - is that YOUR car, Gail?

Then you have those that would bite the hand that is trying to feed them.

Lucky for the OP that is was not Jeff, Pork Chops at the ready in both hands methinks

Given the current situation with the swine flu, are we allowed to throw pork chops?

    😀

Cooked is fine. Raw is right out though.

I thought Jeff took right out of the freezer for maximum impact.

Heh... like anything else, "It Depends". 😛

Heh... I looked at the post. You cannot pork chop that which is not there either in mind, body, or spirit.

  • Yep, just confirms what I said, the snow just doesn't stay around. I Love Colorado!

  • I refuse to post a link, but I really want to know what our favorite PhD candadate learned while in school for his current degrees.

I'm also curious how he manages to keep his job, besides the help he gets from SSC.
