Why do you say they suck? I love mine.

Love mine too, it just has to be said, it is not a replacement for a computer. Very nice for simpler things (games, writing, reading, etc), but not a computer replacement.

Very true. A big part of the reason I love mine is the games I play on it, especially Titan. I haven't used it for a hell of a lot other than that so far, but I'm sure I will as soon as I need to buy another computer manual. Perhaps Grant's new book. Sadly I'd already purchased a bunch of computer books just before I got the iPad.

You can write on yours? As in heavily write?

I've always thought that writing would be near impossible to do on that thing without additional peripherals that would make the iPad less of a portable device and more like a laptop.

It all depends on how comfortable you are with the screen keyboard. I find it much more usable than I thought I would. I bet a real keyboard would help with that, but I haven't even looked for one yet. You should try one out in an Apple store. Tell them what you're looking for and type out a few pages. You could also see if they make a keyboard that doesn't make it too cumbersome.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

Yup, it isn't about need, it is about utility. There are a lot of things we don't need that are still nice to have.

Any one know if those spreading Colorado wild fires are threatening Steve's home or the horses? Any one hear from Steve on twitter or whatever?

    http://news.yahoo.com/colorado-fire-near-pikes-peak-forces-11-000-014551591.html

    Steve is safe.

Our summer camp was cancelled by the Springer Fire (11 Mile canyon), so we regrouped and spent 2 days at Grays Peak camping. I stayed unwired the rest of the week, doing stuff at home and relaxing. Course, this was partially not my fault as our DSL line was bouncing most of the week.

Saw smoke last night, blew over the house and could smell the burned trees, but I'm about 50mi from the Air Force Academy. So far no issues. The Elbert fire was contained down there, about 30 mi from me.

  • Holy crap you guys and gals post a lot. Had 20+ pages in this thread from a week off.

Oh, and a nice horror story for you all[/url].

Well, I did the best I could.

I 'liked' the book on Amazon, gave it 5 stars and wrote a small review.

Also voted the 1-star review as unhelpful, as it discusses only layout and not really the content.

Oh, don't vote those down. Those were honest reviews. Mind you, I don't like them, but I respect them.

I find it an unfair review. If you order an iPad and it gets broken during shipment, does it mean all iPads suck? (yes they do, but that's beside the point :-))

Why do you say they suck? I love mine.

I'm mostly talking about the vendor lock-in and the lack of connectability. The device itself is quite awesome, albeit a bit pricy. I'm just not a big fan of the games Apple plays.

I'm not sure what you mean by "vendor lock in" and lack of connectability.

How many output ports does the iPad have that don't need expensive cabling?

    http://techcrunch.com/2010/01/27/apple-has-a-solution-for-the-ipads-missing-sd-card-slot-and-usb-port-adapters/

I find a modern device without SD and USB a bit lacking.

Vendor lock-in: not necessarily on the iPad, but more in general. Apple forcing users to upgrade iTunes (http://www.geek.com/articles/apple/updated-apple-forces-itunes-users-to-upgrade-2004115/), forcing OS X to run only on their (very overpriced) hardware et cetera et cetera.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an Apple hater. I have an iPod and I had a Macbook Pro for a very long time and I was absolutely delighted about it. I was just glad my company paid for it 😀

The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

  • Wow, there isn't a single comment I read in that iTunes article that had any sort of politeness or logical debate to it. Even the ones that masqueraded as polite had little digs in the way they spelled brand names.

A lot of hate on that comments thread, on both sides of the argument.

I find a modern device without SD and USB a bit lacking.

True, but thanks to my LAN I almost never need to plug in. And Apple includes a cable with the machine, so I don't see the cable as expensive. The USB and SAN adapters you linked to strike me as very niche use, especially as SAN standards are so variable that I need adapters for my MicroSan even though I have the ports that cover something like 10 different memory card types. Just plunk the data in Dropbox or the like and grab it from there.

If you really need in-the-field access to your iPad and a memory card, you've already shelled out for the iPad, the SAN adapter can't be that expensive.

As far as being "forced" to upgrade, that's pretty much industry standard at this point. Not a day goes by when Adobe isn't prompting me to upgrade and if I ignore it for too long it stops being compatible with what I'm trying to see on the internet. Same for RealPlayer or any other plug in. Websites developed today aren't compatible with browsers from a decade ago.

I agree that the hardware married to software thing is annoying, but with devices, including tablets, that's the way the industry is heading. With computers it almost killed Apple, but they do make good devices. I'm a PC guy, but I have an iPod, iPhone and iPad because those are the best at what they do. I wouldn't tough a Mac laptop or desktop with a 10' pole. I'm only a 6' Pole, myself.

  • What I find most annoying about the iPad is how difficult it is to transfer files from a computer to it or vice versa without restoring to iTunes or Dropbox. I tried moving some pdfs to the iPad from my computer just as a file transfer and there was simply no way to do it.

What do you mean "restoring"? Or did you mean "resorting?"
