...
Before a game can be over for the day the side that is not 'in', has to bowl a minimum no. of overs. The game lasts up to 5 days and in the majority of cases ends in a draw.
...
And people in the US complain when a Yankees vs Red Sox game lasts 4 hours!:w00t:

As far as "touch base" goes, doesn't Cricket have bases as well?Yes, it does. But I believe "touch base" is totally American, referencing the baseball practice of touching the bases with the ball to call someone out. The nearest other reference I could find was "tagging up."
You must play a different version of cricket in the USA!!!:w00t::-D

Now a days, you do not see that many Draws in test. I am glad. Even though it takes 5 days, I prefer test over the One days or twenty20 otherwise known as pyjama cricket. πyou won't be watching the world cup then? π
Cant because they are not showing it in any channels. π
I thought you were in the Windies? No cricket in the Windies, I'm shocked!

You will never know just how much you have blasphemed!...
understand?
Hee. I guess it's my turn for the tar, feathers, mini-mags and titanium spork treatment. @=)
One of these days, I will actually sit down and find cricket on Beeb America. I've only ever seen it in Doctor Who, and that barely counted.
I saw part of a live match once while in Avebury. It looked interesting, but since there was no announcer, I had no explanations for what I was seeing.
Whatever you do, don't watch highlights, watch a full game. When I was in Glasgow I watched a late night highlight's show and it was more baffling than a match. Everything out of context and almost entirely "that's a 4, that's a 6, that's another 6, that's a 4". I suppose it is like trying to understand baseball by just seeing home-runs.

An over - the bowler bowls 6 balls from one end, that is an over. At the end of the over another bowler (it must be a different person) bowls 6 balls from the other end....ad infinitum.
no ball - at least some part of the bowlers lead foot must be behind the crease - known as 'striking' the crease. If all of his foot is in front of the crease it is called a no ball, the side that are in 'in' (the batting side) are awarded 1 run and that ball must be bowled again. So theoretically an over could have more than 6 balls.
Cricket can be slow but there is no finer way of spending a lazy summer afternoon then sitting with your mates getting slowly blotto whilst 22 cricketers provide background entertainment.

NO BALL - A bowler is supposed to bowl (Pitch) from the box near the stumps (Mount) If the bowler oversteps the line, then it is No Ball. If you bowl a no ball, the batting team gets a run automatically and all runs that they hit.
OVER : A bowler can pitch only 6 legitimate times consecutively. After that another bowler will have to pitch another set of 6 legitimate balls. When they pitch 6 legitimate balls, it is considered an OVER.
PS : Regarding the controversy, the claim is that the bowler overstepped the line as part of spot betting. Kind of like betting on whether Bonds will hit a Home run in the next innings. π

Excellent, and quite clear since I do know a little about cricket. So the same batter can be "up" through the entire other side bowling to him? Switching creases every 6 balls?

And now I understand how this can be a way to cheat! If you don't know what it means and you hear someone bowled a no ball, you think they didn't bowl and to do that at specified times doesn't seem to make any sense at all. Thanks!

I felt the same about the minor league baseball games I've gone to and the one major league game. For the most part if I'm watching sports I want more action, like American football, and to actually watch the game not just have it in the background. I saw Rugby 7s recently and that seemed interesting.
If I'm just hanging out with friends it is usually around a board game.

back in the 80's when the west indies were the best team in the world they played a test match against england.
they had a brilliant batsmen called Michael Holding, england had a great bowler called Bob Willey.
at the start of the over the TV announcer uttered the immortal line
'and the batsmans Holding the bowlers Willey'
true story. π

Seemed to me more like betting on whether the pitcher will throw a ball or perform a balk, something completely in the pitcher's control, though worse because it intentionally scores points for the other team.

My fiancee likes to listen to the announcers when I watch American football for the bizarre things they say. She'll love to hear that one.
I only know one name in cricket: Brian Lara who plays (played?) for the West Indies team. He holds the records for most runs as I understand it. What I didn't know is that he set the record against England and I inadvertantly pissed off an Englishman by mentioning Brian Lara and the record he'd set. I didn't know he'd set it against England, I was trying to be friendly! : -)

That was a good one... π
I remember both of them. Bob Willis was one the best for England at that time. Michel Holding was one of the best bowler for west indies. West indies used to terrorize the other countries. He was not a good batsman though.
I remember seeing a picture of gatting (From England) his chest was bruised where the ball was thudding into at around 90 MPH. They are way harder than a base Ball. it is like a Rock. π

When all 11 men have batted that is called an innings. An opening batsman can bat through the entire innings yes. At the end of an over, the bowlers swap ends, but the batsmen do NOT. Introduces a little extra twist.
Now I have seen everything. I have become a cricket bore. I am going to stop now. π

I saw a documentary about the Trobrian Islanders and how they play cricket. They use a hardwood ball.
