Are the posted questions getting worse?

So, you want fresh topics in that forum, rather then responses to the pinned topic? Just confirming from what I see. When I read the pinned item it seemed more simplistic.

Nice idea though, should get some value there.

Respond to individual posts. I'll close as someone gets the topic.

OK, sign up for articles. Please just pick one, then another when you finish.

If you have ideas, feel free to post them, but try to pick things you see a couple times in the forums.

As a side bar, I notice you were able to pin a post at the beginning of the new forum. It would be really cool if you could pin a post with links to the two forum "How to post/etiquette" articles by Gail and myself.

pin a post in that forum? Or others? Don't want to pin in every forum.

Shame you can't have those two links just be immediately clickable as soon as someone hits 'Add Topic' in the editor window. I'm all for them being pinned in every forum, though... :w00t:

I'll be happy to do the "Ordering months by number" thing. Like Lynn says, though, it would really be helpful if we knew what the original post was, if possible.

Not sure where it is, but I've seen it a few times this year and dropped it on a list. People for some reason don't get the datepart/datename thing. a simple one pager, make up a common example, would suffice. Some code, explain how the functions work, the ordering, etc.

Ah... THOSE problems! I know exactly what you're talking about.

We need a catchy category name for these types of articles. You mentioned you wanted to "fill holes". How'z about "SQL Spackle" for a name? Something like "Helping fill the cracks in code." could be used for a tag line.

If you wanted a small jingle... (sung to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")

    No, no, no you won't,

    Loop with any class,

    Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,

    Set-Based saves your ___! 😛

I was kind of hoping to have them pinned in at least the General, TSQL, Newbie, and Performance related forums.

I don't get the SQL Spackle reference, but if the author should definitely be shown as Phil McCracken 😎

  • Here's what I quickly came up with to act as both the introduction to the article and the "teaser" for the news letter for the "Ordering by Months" article...

SQL Spackle: Ordering Months By Number

    Introduction:

[edit] I took the "teaser" down from this post because I changed it in the final article and didn't want anyone to accidently copy the wrong one.

Of course, "SQL Spackle" might not be what you folks want for the category name. Maybe a take off on the old "You asked for IT" show (play on "IT") or something similar. You folks make some more suggestions and we'll have Steve pick one. Please, no reference to kilts or Grant's legs as a category. 😀

BTW, SSC usually has a blogger at the blogger table during the PASS Summit. Usually it's me, someone that can take notes during keynotes and post them. Since I won't be there....

any of you rapid posters want to lug a laptop to the keynote each day and take some notes and post a blog? One a day is fine, more are better, but up to you.

Ping me if you want the spot.

You paying my way there? :w00t::-D

  • Ok... first one is done. I liked Paul's idea of "Phil McCracken" as the author. Please see attached just for a preview. Steve, I'll post it in the "Write for us" link so you don't have much to do to put it out there.

@steve-2, if you want to go with "SQL Spackle" and/or "Phil McCracken", I'll modify the article I've sent to you.

Just to clarify... I let "Phil McCracken" make the statement about what the SQL Spackle series was. I signed the article at the end. We can change that if everyone would like. We can turn "Phil" into a real hero. The problem is what Wayne pointed out in a PM to me... I have a very unique writing style and I think everyone would know which ones I wrote.

I've already submitted my article via "write for us" but I can certainly change it.

You shouldn't mention that in an SQL forum: "Row" is unspeakable, think of columns and sets instead. :hehe:
